When I first started mixing, I’d send a mix to my mentor and in a few minutes he would send concise—but razor-sharp—notes.

It was brutal.

I’d spend hours obsessing over the mix, work up the courage to share… and he’d reply so quickly with notes that felt completely obvious only after I read them.

The truth? I couldn’t hear the problems myself—not until someone with more experience shared their perspective.

That’s when I realized feedback from someone a few steps ahead isn’t a blow to the ego —it’s a shortcut, and the fastest way to accelerate progress.

One of the biggest mindset shifts you can make as an engineer is to see coaching and mentoring as a competitive advantage. I’ve met too many engineers who want to be left alone to mix. To be seen as the expert. No second-guessing. No notes.
